Bingo: A Rich Tradition Continues and Evolves

Did you know that when you log in to your favourite site to play some games of online bingo that you are continuing an historic game? It’s true. The game of bingo can be traced back to the 1500s, and considering its growing popularity, it will undoubtedly continue for many more generations.
The game originated from an Italian lottery that began in 1530 when Italy was united. The Italian National Lottery continues in its original form today.
In 1778, the game’s popularity grew from just the working class. It was played on a card that contained three horizontal and nine vertical rows. Each vertical row contained ten numbers with the card containing the numbers 1 through 90, very similar in concept to the popular 90-ball bingo of today, but did not contain the blank squares.
In 1929, a toy salesman named Edwin S. Lowe stopped at a carnival outside Jacksonville, Georgia, USA. He was enthralled with a carnival game called Beano that the pitchman adapted from the European game.
Lowe further adapted the game and offered play to friends. They were just as enthralled as all the carnival players who refused to leave the tent earlier that summer. An enthused friend of Lowe’s could hardly contain her excitement as her card filled up. As she covered the winning square, she stuttered, not able to vocalize “Beano.” Instead, she yelled the now-famous call,
“B-B-BINGO!”
Next time you win, you may stutter, too. It’s quite okay. Winning is exciting!
